Integrative Restoration
About iRest

Integrative Restoration (iRest) is a profoundly transformative practice that leads to lasting psychological change, as well as physical and emotional healing. It teaches how to live a contented life, free of conflict, anxiety, fear and suffering by experiencing one’s True Nature. The goal of iRest is for practitioners to embody a skill they can use throughout their lives to assist them in experiencing a sense of mastery when encountering difficult situations, and to enliven a sense of joy pervading daily life. Ultimately, it is possible to live each moment fully aware, accepting the moment as it is. iRest is being used by the American military to treat veterans suffering from PTSD. Integrative Restoration is also being used with college/university students, the homeless, children, fertility issues and others. Please see the download pages for more information.

This 10-step process integrates by healing the various splits present in the body, mind and heart and restores us to the lived experience of our True Nature as Pure Awareness from which we realize our underlying inter-connectedness with all of life.

Participants of who have been using the 10 step iRest practice have reported:

  • Decreased insomnia
  • Reduced depression, anxiety and fear
  • Decreased perception of chronic and acute pain
  • Improved interpersonal relations
  • Increased comfort with situations they could not control, and paradoxically an
  • Increased sense of control in their lives
iRest accomplishes its goal through two basic steps:
  • The bodily experience of True Nature or Pure Awareness, and
  • The release of negative body sensations, emotions, thoughts, images, beliefs and stress that give rise to self-destructive patterns.
iRest, a synthesis of modern psychology and ancient yogic wisdom is a non-dogmatic, non-religious, secular practice. The practice of iRest induces relaxation throughout the body and mind by activating the parasympathetic nervous system incorporating time tested psycho-physiological approaches that include sensory, cognitive and emotional therapies, such as systematic desensitization, reciprocal inhibition and habituation. It provides easy to use tools for achieving an inner calm and reducing physical, mental or emotional distress.
that you integrate throughout all phases of your life. As iRest teaches awareness of and neutralizes the source of inner stress, then inner tensions decrease, self-confidence and well-being increases, which remains with you as you go about your daily life.

iRest consists of a series of 45-60 minute sessions where participants are guided through a gentle 10 step sequence that covers:
• Developing an Inner Sanctuary / Resource
• Finding and articulating one’s Heart’s Desire
• Intending to remain awake, aware and welcoming
• Body sensing awareness
• Breath and energy awareness
• Systematic desensitization and disidentification to neutralize:
  1. Negative body sensations and stress
  2. Negative feelings & emotions and
  3. Negative thoughts, beliefs, images and memories
• The experience of joy and well-being
• Freedom from the sense of separation generated by the senses, mind and ego-I thought
• The ability to experience equanimity with the realization that everything in life is constantly changing, and
• Embodiment of pure awareness during each life circumstance

Integrative Restoration can be practiced in three ways; in a group (the best way to start), in a dyad (to resolve specific issues), and by one's self (the eventual goal).

The US Army recently completed a feasibility study that researched Miller’s iRest protocol at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital Center (WRAMHC) with active duty soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who were experiencing post-traumatic stress syndrome. As a result of the initial findings, Deployment Clinical Center (DHCC) at WRAMHC has integrated iRest into its weekly treatment program for soldiers who are rotating through the DHCC clinic. Studies were also completed at a homeless shelter in northern California funded by the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) in conjunction with the Committee on the Shelterless (COTS) and the Center of Timeless Being (CTB), as well as at the University of Missouri using iRest with college students.

Currently research projects and programs are either in development or are currently in place utilizing iRest for/with:
  • Treatment With Active Duty And Non-Active Duty Soldiers Experiencing PTSD
  • Military Resiliency Programs
  • The Homeless, Including Adults And Children
  • Substance Abuse And Relapse Prevention
  • People With Sleep Disorders
  • People Experiencing Chronic Pain
  • People With Breathing Disorders
  • The Well-Being Of College Students And Children
  • Adolescents At Risk
  • Incarcerated Individuals Including Men And Women
  • Food Related Issues
  • Infertility Issues

Richard Miller has spent twenty-six years developing iRest to make it uniquely suitable for Westerners. He has taught the iRest protocol to thousand individuals in classes, retreats and individual sessions throughout North America. Richard is currently researching its effectiveness with various populations.

Training programs leading to certification as an Integrative Restoration iRest Teacher are now being offered throughout North America by the Center of Timeless Being for people interested in participating in these studies, or learning and/or becoming certified to teach Millers iRest protocol.
